What We Accept
The following are guidelines for sorting materials. Current market conditions have made it challenging to keep accepting certain items, but if they are sorted properly we have been able to find a market for them. We may periodically have to update these guidelines as contamination parameters keep changing and will let the public know with signage and on Facebook/Website.
The Formula for Recycling:
Accepted Material + Sorted + Clean = Recyclable
Thanks for your understanding and cooperation.
CARDBOARD - Located in Trailer #1.
- Corrugated Cardboard
- Pasteboard - i.e. cereal boxes, gift boxes and the like
Flatten all cardboard. Small cardboard and slick pasteboard pack into available boxes along the wall of the trailer tightly.
Volunteers have to climb the stack to load the trailer so we build the stack so that it is safe to do so. Slick pasteboard in the stack creates dangerous “fault lines” which is why we ask that they get boxed. Please follow these instructions to help the Volunteers and the Public be safe.
Please do not leave water logged cardboard, greasy or oily cardboard, food in cardboard (remove pizza remnants) or cardboard that is heavily dirty. These are all contaminants.
PAPER - Located in Trailer #2.
- Newspaper
- Magazines
- Office paper
- Soft Bound Books
If you are able, please pack in a paper bag or bundle with twine so that we can periodically build paper walls to hold the paper back in the trailer to the height required to maximize tonnage. The target height is marked by orange tape on the walls near the front of the stack.
Please do not keep paper in plastic bags or boxes as they are contaminants. Remove and throw all loose paper as far back in trailer as possible and recycle bag and box in appropriate location.
Hard Bound Books are not recyclable even with their hard covers removed. This is because the binding gums up the equipment causing issues during the re-pulping process.
- Shredded Paper – Bag and place in Green Shed. We allow the public to use it for animal bedding, gardening, crafts, etc. If the shed gets full we top fill Trailer #2 with it to finish out the load.
Please make sure that you do not bring wet paper as it can mold in trailer and contaminate the load.
Wet Paper = Trash.
PLASTIC
- Plastics coded #1, 2, 4 and 5 (Look on the bottom of the container in the recycling triangle)
Put loose plastics in labeled totes. If you have a garbage bag of plastic that you are leaving, place bag over by bin of plant containers.
Small Plastics - Lids can remain on containers but if removed please place them along with any other small plastics, such as straws, in the garbage can labeled “Small Plastics”.
Plastic lids with steel inserts need to be recycled with steel. Ensure and Snapple Beverage Containers are a good examples.
- Plastic bags – Separate the plastic bags from all other plastics and place them in large garbage bags
that are located in various convenient locations at MARC:
(1) far end of the clear and brown glass rolloff, (2) in front of the plastics compacter (3) at the end of Trailer #1 and #2.
Plastic Bags can be grocery bags as well as any other type of plastic bag.
- Flower/Planting Pots – When the Gardening Dept. is open at Lowe’s during the summer, please
take your pots there as they recycle them and that is where we haul them. When the Gardening Dept.
is closed, we can accept flower pots but no planting packs as they are #6’s and not recyclable.
